How to stop comparing yourself to others?

I believe that we live in the era of social media. Being on social media has led us to compare ourselves with others. We kind of do this without even being aware of it. When you are scrolling down on your Instagram or Facebook, looking at the pictures of the pottery barn-like house or pictures from a Maldives vacay, you might always say to yourself that “I wish I could go there too.” or “I wish I was at her place to visit a place like this.” or “I wish I could wear these fancy clothes too”.

If you say any of these things to yourself, there is nothing to be ashamed of because people who don’t even admit it are wrong. We all do this at some point. Why talk about others, I often do that too so it is fine. This thing is not healthy but you know what? We are humans and we can use our intellect to find a conclusion for it.

I have read multiple books on growing attitude and character. I have mentioned all the best books here: Recommended books by sudarshan purohit. I am sure it will help you a lot in becoming a better (more happy and successful) individual.

So let’s talk about What We Can Do To Avoid The Comparison We Do. Here is the top 10 advice from me to you.

●   Start Meditating

Meditation is the practice in which you have the opportunity to deeply look into yourself and it helps you to detach yourself from the outer world of materialism. When you meditate, you get to have a tour of yourself. When you look into yourself you see that you have got a lot to offer to this universe, you have got so much potential. You are good at many things which no one else can embezzle from you.

When you know your resilience, you will barely compare yourself to others. So, start meditating from today. If not for a longer duration then just give yourself 5 minutes every day. It has changed my life and so will yours. Meditation brings discipline in life and Buddha says, “A disciplined mind brings happiness“.

●   Express your gratitude

Write three things every day that you feel grateful for. You have got so so much to be grateful for. The earth you step on, the food you eat, the family and friends you have, the resources you have, the oxygen by the plants you take in. Many people are not fortunate for even these small things and it’s the small things that matter. It doesn’t matter what they have, what matters is what you have.

Gratitude turns what we have into enough“.

●   Compete with yourself instead of others

Your competition is not with them, it is with yourself. A person who wins over himself is the king of the world. If you put yourself on a pedestal, there is nothing that can lead you down. You don’t have to reach where they are but you have to create your destiny which is far above anything else. You just got to focus on yourself and keep working instead of having the attitude of competition with others. Competition with others oversees jealousy which is another disease to fight with. So no competition, no resentment.

Jealousy comes from counting others’ blessings instead of your own.“- The Bible

●   Celebrate others’  Success

Instead of cussing over others’ success and being obscene about it, you have to start celebrating with them. If you are being foul-mouthed about anybody you are bringing in the negativity and who needs negativity right? So just be a part of everybody’s happiness. It will bring happiness. Always remember that “Whatever goes around, comes around.”

●   List out things you like about yourself.

Being aware of your virtues and excellence is the greatest attainment. It gives you a connotation that you are no less than anyone. It liberates you from jealousy and you take a step forward to contentment. Keep a journal and write about the things that you like about yourself. Things that you think you are good at.

Love yourself first and everything falls into line.

●   Stop emphasizing other people’s Instagram stories.

Here is the truth, whatever you see on social media does not reflect another person’s reality. At least most of it does not. You might see them clicking pictures happily living their life but there is nothing perfect in this world. Everybody has their unseen reality hidden from the world. People on social media focus on illustrating their happy side only and this is how they are masked. So, stop thinking that they are all happy and all the problems are just with you. We all deal with a lot of stuff on our own and that is okay to feel things.

The moment you accept yourself, you grow.”- Xan Oku

●   Start your daily journal

Journaling is the greatest thing that I started. Whenever I have deep conversations, I recommend journaling to everyone. It helps to keep a track of yourself, Your habits, mood, activities, and many more. This helps you being self immersed and therefore you get less time to assess, other people. It helps you in improving yourself. It motivates you to do more.

A chain of habits are too light to be felt until they are too heavy to be broken.”- Warren Buffet

●   Feel contented

Whatever you have is enough. When you practice gratitude, it makes everything that you have enough. Of course, everybody wants to upgrade over what they have but in the meantime, feel content with what you have. Everything will ensue with time.

Many people lose small joys in the hope of big happiness. So be thankful for what you have and you will end up having more.

●   Remember, the grass is always greener on the other side.

No matter how much we have, we see more on the other person’s platter. The grass looks greener on the other side but you know what decides the color of the grass? It depends on how well it’s taken care of. So just focus on the fertilizer you put in there, trust the process and everything will find its way.

Does comparison with others affect your daily life?

Yes, it does affect your daily routine too. If you keep comparing yourself with others following are the things you might start to face:

  • Anxiety Disorders

If you compare yourself daily, you might invite anxiety to take over you. Thinking about the future and interrogating yourself like ” Will I ever be able to buy that car that he has recently bought?” can lead you to anxiety issues. This is harmful to mental as well as physiological health. So, avoid comparing yourself and avoid anxiety.

  • Overthinking

Overthinking your success and achievements can happen by comparison.

  • Not feeling enough

Feeling like you are not good enough by looking at their success. This leads you to a lack of confidence which is our next pointer.

  • Lack of confidence

With this, you have a lack of confidence. This will lead to poorer performance in work too.

  • Grumpiness

When you compare yourself, grumpiness in your activities will arise. By feeling not enough, looking at other people will bring jealousy and this might lead to irritability in your attitude.

So, now you know what happens when you compare yourself. Just know that You Are Enough. You Are Abundant. You are loved for what you have and what you do. Stop thinking about others and just focus on yourself. Your garden is as prettier as theirs.
