We all make many friends in life. First, we make friends in our neighborhood, then we make friends in school, then in colleges, and last at our workplace. Mostly the friends which we make in our neighborhood and at school are the closest ones. We share a very strong bond with them. This happens because we don’t judge people at that age. We make friendship just because we enjoy their company.

The more we spend time with someone the stronger the bond we have. When we are kids we spend most of our time playing with friends and that is also one of the reasons for the stronger bond.

We make a lot of friends in our life but very few are life long friends. If we analyze we will find some basic characteristics which we find in those lifelong friends. These characteristics are what we will discuss in this article.

When we talk about friendship, certain people are better than others. They have better qualities of a good friend than others. Although some friends may be in the casual group more, other friends may be in your inner circle.

Many people have said that good friends are difficult to find and harder to hold. Hence, before choosing a friend we must look for qualities of a good friend in that person.

Everyone wants good friends. A friend may have many good qualities, but the most important ones can be the qualities that add up to a true friendship.

People face many problems in their lives. Some problems are mental. Some problems are physical. In a problematic situation, we need to discuss our problems with someone. If we don’t express our life becomes stressful. Humans are the most expressive creature on the face of the planet. So, it is necessary to express our emotions to someone. That someone is a friend. That is why we should look for the good qualities of a friend in that person.

This is the reason why people say-

“Your best friend can be your ideal better half.”

So, friendship is one of the most important relationships a person has. But, if that friend is a negative person or a destructive person then he or she can destroy your life too. That is why we should check whether that friend is good for us or not? That is why we should check for the good qualities of a friend in a person before making him or her a friend. Out of your many friends, you can evaluate whether they have the good qualities required to build a true friendship or not.

It is your duty to advise your friends if they are on the wrong path but it should be within limits. If the toxicity of your friend’s life is destroying your life too then it’s a red flag. “Even looking at the face of a dishonest friend is a sin. One should leave that friend the way one leaves one’s old clothes without thinking once.”

The quality of a good friend is that a friend should be honest.

Honesty demonstrates that your friend is trustworthy and thus will remain by your side for the toughest of days and will less likely deceive in the future. Like a true family, friends should always be ready to protect us from problems. A friend should be trustworthy. You share your deep down secrets & embracement with your friend. He or she should keep that little secret safe. Friendship has no sense if there is no honesty. Hence, honesty is a quality of a good friend. The quality of a good friend is that a friend should be accepting.

He or she should accept you as you are. We all have both positive and negative traits in us. A good friend should like positive traits and must work on improving us in our negative traits. If our friend is not comfortable with our negative traits then he will not enjoy our company. Thus, it is also the quality of a good friend.

The quality of a good friend is that a friend should have a trait of low maintenance.

A person who is highly demanding is not a good friend. A person who is with you just because of your money then he or she is a mercenary, not a friend. These qualities are not the qualities of a good friend. A friend who is always demanding a lot of money, time, attention, etc needs high maintenance. Hence, they will just thwart your growth.

The quality of a good friend should be that he should be non-judgmental.

Just because you did something wrong doesn’t mean you are a bad person. Mistakes happen. People make mistakes so a friend should not judge you for your mistake. Ignoring a mistake or helping a friend to learn from that mistake is one of the qualities of a good friend. So, it is important to be non-judgmental because it ruins the fabric of love between friends & it demeans your friendship.

The quality of a good friend should be that a friend should be loyal.

Loyalty is essential in every relationship. Loyalty beefs up the connection between friends, it increases their confidence. Loyalty means giving constant support. As we say a good friend gets tested in tough times. This is because most of the friends are not loyal. They are with you in good times but run away in bad times. A true friend would remain loyal in every situation. This is a very important quality of a good friend.

The quality of a good friend should be that a friend should be respectful.

Respect just mean that your friend should appreciate your positive qualities. Respect leads to love. If your friend is respecting you he will start loving/ liking you. Without respect, there is no relationship. But respect is nowadays difficult to find. Most people think that they are the best and all others have no adorable qualities. It is also important to note that he or she is not your friend who admires you because you have money or social standing. Respect is a sense of profound appreciation for someone or anything that has been created by their skill, qualities, or achievements.

The quality of a good friend should be that a friend should be understanding.

He or she should understand your emotions. A friend should be empathetic. They understand your feelings, emotions, interests, etc. You can always open up yourself in front of a good friend. Every time you feel sad, uncomfortable, happy, enthusiastic, etc they should understand it & should act according to that. A friend should be a good listener. If he can’t listen to you how will he understand you?

To have a good understanding means he is a good learner. His learning attitude is very good. As he will try to understand you which means he will try to understand the situation and will try to figure out the solution for that one needs to enjoy learning. There are many situations in life when we have to make some tough decisions. At that time a friend should support another friend. A friend should be emotionally & mentally available in tough times. He or she should not abandon you. It is understood that having strong & supportive friendships helps in providing emotional help during stressful times. This support system reduces stress, increases life span, and makes your life happening.

I am sure you would find very few friends like this because a good friend must have a good attitude and character and no one is teaching this. That is why we see people don’t believe in friendship nowadays because it is very rare to find good people, who can become lifelong friends.
