Right from the beginning of our life, in school and college, we have been trained, of our mind and body, to be a good employee serving our employer and our society. That is the reason students go for various higher degrees – to earn a good job and secure a high status. Institutions are where we learn the necessary technical skills that are required to perform a job.

All the students in the same programme study the same. But, very often, we might have noticed that a particular guy /girl outshines everyone in his /her career and acquires promotions, a raise in salary, and ultimately, a rise in social status. The company acquires a huge profit because of him /her and considers them very valuable to the welfare of the company.

In contrast to this, Soft skill is one which we learn outside of our common education – our manners, attitude and other skills. It is this skill that differentiates successful employees from other employees.

Many employees are not committed to their job or organization. The reason is simple. They are not interested either in their job profile or the organization they are working for. Though this depends on each person’s interests, the fact that you are working under that organization and in the allotted job profile and also that the company is paying you does not change. As long as you work there, you are its employee.

Even though you may not like the job or the organization, as long as you are there, you must never sway from your duties. You have to prove your talent and skill, wherever you are. BE ADAPTABLE:

Adaptability is the number one skill that is required in today’s world. You should make yourself adaptable under any situation, be it job location or timings at the beginning, so as to prove your devotion to your job and the company. As an additional outcome, the quality of adaptability will also impress your superiors in the hierarchical structure of your organization.

This is an important requirement, especially in the corporate sector where there is huge competition both in projects as well as in promotions. While hard skills such as one’s technical skills will help cross half the bridge, the remaining half could be crossed only by way of proper and calculated actions. Actions here denote respecting one’s superiors, talking politely and being friendly.

There is an important aspect here, which is Communication. While the actions are described above, the reactions to your actions are determined by the way you communicate. A polite and friendly way of communicating is of utmost importance. More importantly, respect everyone in your words, even if you do not like them personally. No ill taking and above all, no back talk. These two can destroy your career, and must be avoided at all costs. Try to earn a good name among your colleagues with your talk and actions.

BE PROFESSIONAL:

This is another important and mandatory quality. Your attitude determines your altitude. Similarly, the way you present yourself determines your future course in your career. Professionalism lies in everything – the way you talk, how punctual you are, finishing your work on time, and respecting everyone.

As an employee, you have to be professional. Mere technical skills won’t do the cut. You have to display your dedication and devotion to the job and the company you work for. No man can be perfect. DEVELOP LEADERSHIP QUALITIES:

Great leaders, businessmen and CEO of top companies in the world were once employees. They rose from the bottom of the hierarchical ladder to occupy the topmost position in the world. How did they achieve this great feat? By developing leadership qualities of course!

Developing Leadership qualities is another important skill in today’s world. And from where does the process start? From your office. There are times when you may be given the responsibility of handling a team or a project or an assignment. Never ever refuse such an opportunity. In fact, always try to get such an opportunity instead of waiting for it. Prove to everyone that you are a capable leader. And then you will rise in the hierarchy real quick to occupy some of the top spots in the world.

BE A SOLUTION SEEKER:

As stated above, great businessmen and CEO’s have begun their career as an employee. But their career growth leading to occupy some of the best positions in the organization hierarchy did not occur only due to developing leadership skills. It was based on another important skill that they possessed. They were ‘solution seekers’.

Along with knowing how to be a good employee, here’s how you can be a team player.

We all are aware of the problems surrounding us. We see and read about it. But there are only very few who just does not stop there and seek to find a solution. Though hard it may be, they succeed in that. A great example is Google Chrome, the idea for which was proposed by Google CEO Sundar Pichai, who, at that time was Product Chief. Had he not found a solution and a better alternative to Microsoft browser and Mozilla Firefox, Google would not have grown to this extent and so is his growth.

Problems finding is a relatively easier task that can be done by mere observing. Whereas Solution Seeking is the real challenge as it takes us a step forward, be it in the development of company or mankind itself. So, always strive to be a Solution Seeker rather than a Problem finder.
