How to be Committed?
“Most people fail not because of a lack of desire but because of a lack of commitment.”Vince Lombardi
Sticking to commitments no matter what is the basic difference between ace players and unsuccessful people.
To start with let’s first google the word “Commitment”. Commitment is an agreement or pledge to do something in the future. It is the state or quality of being dedicated to a cause, activity, etc We usually think that commitment means trying hard and making a lot of attempts. It was the same to me until I read “The Ultimate Secret of Getting Absolutely Everything You Want, by Mike Hernacki.”

A commitment was the essence of The Ultimate Secret. According to the author, the key to getting what you want is the ” willingness to do whatever it takes”. If it takes you to run 100 miles, you will run those 100 miles; If it takes you to run 500 miles, you will run those 500 miles; If it takes you to run 1000 miles, you will run those1000 miles. Of course, at outset, you will never know how many miles you have got to run to reach your destination but you will have to start to reach. You will have to make the commitment to reach your destination whatever miles it takes you.
When you make a commitment and are willing to do whatever it takes, you begin to attract the people and circumstances necessary to accomplish your goal. It’s not as if these resources never existed before. It’s just that your mind never focused on finding them. In fact, when you have the willingness to do whatever it takes, the ‘right’ steps are often suddenly revealed to you.

You’ll meet people you never could have planned to meet. Doors will unexpectedly open for you. It might seem like luck or good fortune is smiling on you; in truth, you’ll have created these positive events by making a commitment and thus, instructing your mind to look for them.
“Until one is committed there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back, always ineffectiveness. Concerning all acts of initiative (and creation ) there is one elementary truth, the ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans; that the moment one definitely commits oneself, then Providence moves, too. All sorts of things occur to help one that would otherwise never have occurred. A whole stream of events issues from the decision ,raising in one’s favour all manner of unforeseen incidents and meetings and material assistance, which no man could have dreamt would have come his way.”W.H. Murray

Now since we are versed with the power of commitment, let’s get on to our issue of not sticking to what we commit. Let’s ponder over the possible reasons for the same. Not interesting or important enough “There’s a difference between interest and commitment. When you’re interested in doing something, you do it only when it’s convenient. When you’re committed to something, you accept no excuses; only results.” Kenneth Blanchard, Sometimes it is just not enough to have the will to do certain tasks.
Sometimes certain tasks don’t seem worth the pain to our brain. To make the tasks important enough, we need to define a purpose. Mere defining purpose leads to dopamine release in our mind and hence we become aligned in our thoughts and actions. We tend to forget Most of the time it is not the complicated psychology of mind but the simple reason of unavailability of the stimulus in the environment.

Suppose you saw a friend of yours all chiselled up, you promise yourself to workout 30 minutes daily right and the moment but it is possible that you might forget it after a day or two. What personally I do is that as soon as I think of something worth committing to, I write it in my diary. Then I research it a bit and come up with a tentative plan. Or You can simply stick a note on a place which you frequently.
If you go with what I do, It would be a plan tested beforehand and it will ensure you working over it since you have spent time planning it. Make it easy There are a whole lot of studies proving that our brain chooses easy and tends to abandon hard. So for a better start, start easy. If you go on running 10 miles on the first day of your jogging. Bet me, you’ll never show up tomorrow. Start with a mile or two and see the magic. You will start loving the process and then that habit will become your identity.

Negotiating with mind We tend to negotiate with ourselves on our commitments. Suppose you committed to complete an assignment today, then you think of first having breakfast and then starting so that you can give your full focus, after breakfast, you end up listening ‘ How you like that ‘ by Blackpink and swayed by the mood you then watch a bunch of F.R.I.E.N.D.S episodes. Happens with all of us, so to tackle it in the first place we’re not to give ourselves the choice to negotiate. As soon as we think of doing something, just head on if possible.
Just don’t allow yourself to negotiate. Relish the opening up to things you dislike “Unless a commitment is made there are only promises and hopes, but no plans.” Peter Drucker Once committed it is not necessary that the path would be easy or unfold itself as soon as we are done with the previous step. Sometimes we will be all alone in an abyss working on the last thing we have ever dreamt of confronting.
Along with knowing how to be committed, check out how you can always respond positively.
We have to have the courage to do anything, by anything I really mean anything to reach your goal. If you are to be an athlete you will have to have the courage to train on the day of your mother’s funeral. You alone can change your mindset, you can develop a positive mindset which can see good at every setback, every nightmare as an opportunity. Getting down on ourselves or giving up in disappointment Sometimes there are too many obstacles than we would have ever imagined. It’s ok to have a cheat day someday.
Just understand the fact that you didn’t sabotage your potential like millions on this planet who had goals from age 15 and could not muster the courage to commit to their dreams and are now 35 rationalizing their acts to live happily. Never over exhaust yourself, sometimes is fine but over exhaustion has never led anyone anywhere. Enjoy the process and I know you can make it. I will not let you go with just the motivation and tips to achieve your destiny rather I will provide you with plans you can follow. If we break commitment into pieces we see a pattern. A pattern of good habits.A pattern of having the courage to abandon a bad habit.

This is what it takes to build a habit. You need a cue, a firsthand stimulus in your environment. Then you need a reason ( craving) to go for something, your purpose. You need to respond to achieve it as in studying thousands of hours to become an IAS officer and then you will be rewarded for your efforts. You will achieve the goal and fulfilment of your purpose will be your reward. These are the cheat sheets from “Atomic Habits, tiny changes and remarkable changes”, it is an incredible book if you want to dig deeper into the mechanism of habit making.
To make an act a ‘Habit’, you need to follow these simple rules of making the habit obvious, attractive, easy and satisfying.

To have a guide to better habit and not for abandoning old bad habits seems quite unfair. So here is a cheat sheet for breaking your bad habit. Go through them and I know it will help you as it helped me. Commitment gives you freedom because you’re no longer distracted by unimportant and previous commitment gives you freedom because it hones your attention and focus, directing them toward what is most efficient at making you healthy and happy.
Commitment makes decision making easier and removes any fear of missing out. Commitment allows you to focus intently on a few highly important goals and achieve a greater degree of success than you otherwise would. In this way, the rejection of alternative liberates us – rejection of what does not align with our most important values, with our chosen metrics, rejection of the constant pursuit of breadth without depth. Commitment means choosing one instead of experiencing everything.
Along with knowing how to be committed, check out how to accept yourself.
You aim to keep your options open as long as possible, you avoid commitment. But while investing deeply in one person, one place, one job, one activity might deny us the breadth of experience we’d like, pursuing a breadth of experience denies us the opportunity to experience the reward of the depth of experience.
Yes, breadth of experience is likely necessary and desirable when you are young – after all, you have to go out there and discover what seems worth investing yourself in. But depth is where the gold is buried. And you have to stay committed to something and go deep to dig it up. That is true in a relationship, in a career, in building a great lifestyle – in everything.
