SHOULD HAVE A SENSE OF PURPOSE:
Being a teacher is more than a job. It is a service to the society, to the nation-building, since they have an important duty of moulding the future leaders in their respective fields. And thus, it is important that a teacher is not just doing his/her duty for money or survival or other factors.
A teacher should have a sense of purpose while delivering his / her service, his / her duty, and not think of it as a menace, or trouble. And that sense of purpose should be to mould students and show them the right way. So to all the teachers out there, do take it as a service to the nation, not just as a job to earn money.
Along with knowing how to be a good teacher, here’s how you can be courageous.
SHOULD LISTEN WELL:
An important quality of a teacher is to listen well to his / her students. Good communication requires both parties to talk as well as listen well. And it is an important and mandatory quality of a teacher to listen to his / her students.
This is because each student is different, has different capabilities, and different interests and needs. So, a teacher can understand each one of them only by way of communicating with the students. In this way, a student also becomes comfortable in reaching out to the teacher. Analyzing a student’s strengths and weakness is the duty of the teacher and that can be achieved only by communicating with them by way of listening.
Along with knowing how to be a good teacher, here’s how you can be a good listener.
A teacher should not only teach subjects from the examination point of view, but also of general knowledge, conducting creative lessons with humour and interactiveness. Nowadays, students lose their focus easily and are averse to attend mundane lectures. This puts the efforts of the teachers in vain, as the students do not get to learn anything. Social media has only amplified this problem, with the attention span of the students changing in seconds.
So, in order to curb this menace of decreasing attention, teachers must make their classes live, with creative and interesting sessions that teach students, the subjects in a practical way. Simulation exercises can also be held to imitate real-life scenario to make students aware and be ready for future challenges. In this way, the teachers can also impart good learning habits and general knowledge in students apart from mundane exam-oriented lectures.
Along with knowing how to be a good teacher, here’s how you can be focused.
With the advent of technology, the teaching methods have been constantly changing. From conventional classrooms, we now have smart classrooms with a powerpoint presentation. And COVID 19 has revealed an altogether different dimension of teaching, that is online classes. So, it becomes imperative for a teacher to be adaptive to changes.
Sometimes, it may even happen in a normal classroom when students fail to understand the concepts which are conveyed by the teacher. In those cases, the teacher has to adopt a different strategy and methodology to make students understand. As said in point three, a teacher should be engaging and being adaptive is another way of engaging as the teacher adapts to the student’s learning needs. And COVID 19 has really shown the need to be adaptive. Thus, this becomes another important quality – to cater to the changing needs of the students and society.
Along with knowing how to be a good teacher, here’s how you can develop humility.
SHOULD PROVIDE EMOTIONAL SUPPORT:
A teacher is another parent, in the sense, he /she takes care of the students for almost one-third of a day. It is the school where students learn theory and practical, subjects and society, and morals and values. But very often, students may face pressure, dilemma or trouble, either due to family problems or due to mental pressure. Sheer competition in almost every field has only aggravated this.
Thus, it also falls on the shoulder of a teacher, the responsibility of being an emotional support to students. Nowadays, students undeniably face pressure, and the worst part is they are not able to express it to anyone, fearing safety and other concerns. Increasing suicides is an evident proof of this statement. Thus, a teacher has to come forward and extend a helping hand to the students in need. They should be supportive, irrespective of a student’s test marks because marks do not decide your life. Rather, your perseverance and values decide your life.
The teachers should understand this reality and not put any more pressure on a student in an already ‘depressingly competitive’ environment. Labelling a student as a ‘weak student’ should be avoided. Each student’s individual talent has to be recognized by the teacher, instead of just forcing him blindly into just one direction. That is the way to create leaders in all fields.
Along with knowing how to be a good teacher, here’s how you can develop a winning attitude.
ARE LIFELONG LEARNERS:
The last, but most important point is this. That a teacher is not just a teacher but should be a lifelong learner. Weird as it may sound, this is cent per cent true. One of the most important skills to being a good teacher is a dedication to continued education and love for learning. Be it in your subject, teaching methodology or additional knowledge, the key to expanding your student base is to expand your knowledge. This will also undeniably give students, a better learning experience.
As stated in the above points, times are changing and teachers need to be as engaging and adaptive as possible. And to acquire these ‘acquirable’ skills, a teacher needs to learn more. Also, increased knowledge of your field of expertise will automatically attract more students. Thus, this quality becomes of utmost importance. So, a teacher should never stop learning and exploring options for the betterment of the life of students, be it in knowledge or values. These teachers, undeniably make the best teachers. If you are a teacher, make this your number one rule and start gaining knowledge for better delivery of services to students, and to society!
Along with knowing how to be a good teacher, here’s how you can motivate people.
A teacher is akin to God, as he /she introduces the world in the true sense, through the door of education. Ladden with such huge responsibility, the teachers should take this profession seriously as a service and must shape students to become better humans, responsible citizens, and above all, great leaders.
